Virak operate at a volume just above stillness. ‘Where It All Begins’ opens with a guitar figure that takes twelve seconds to complete a single phrase, and in that time establishes everything the song will be: patient, slightly suspended, not quite ready to resolve. The Danish outfit have been refining this approach across three EPs, and on this single the discipline has fully arrived.
What separates this from ambient-adjacent indie is the specificity of the vocal performance. Singer Ida Vogt doesn’t float over the music so much as inhabit it at its own tempo, her phrasing shaped by the guitar rather than fighting for space above it. The layering in the chorus is precise — four distinct takes with different emotional registers, combined into something that sounds accidental but clearly isn’t.
The production resists the temptation to fill. There are stretches where only two elements are present, and the track is richer for the restraint. In a moment when indie production defaults to saturation, Virak have made something that rewards the volume being turned up quietly.
